Greta Garbo, Died at 84 - $50 million

Swedish-born American actress Greta Garbo received an Academy Honorary Award and was nominated three times for the Academy Award for Best Actress. It was in 1922 when Garbo accepted a part in a short comedy, Peter the Tramp. She also appeared in Torrent, The Temptress, and Anna Christine. It was her appearance in Grand Hotel that finally earned her the Oscar for Best Picture. Resources say that her portfolio consisted of many lucrative investments, including a fine real estate property in Beverly Hills and a large portion of Rodeo Drive. Hollywood’s elusive star, who gave us some of the most memorable performances in romantic films of the 1930s died at the age of 84 at New York Hospital.

Cary Grant, Died at 82 - $60 million

Known as one of Hollywood’s classic leading men, Cary Grant’s career started in the early 1930s. Born in England, he was best known for his transatlantic accent and ravishingly good looks. Throughout his career Grant was nominated for five Golden Globes and two Academy Awards. In 1970, he received the Honorary Oscar given by none other than Frank Sinatra! Some of his most famous work includes the movies Penny Serenade, The Philadelphia Story and North by Northwest. Grant suffered a fatal cerebral hemorrhage during his tour in November 1986 and was sadly beyond the help of his elder care physician.

Mae West, Died at 87 - $20 million

One of the biggest stars in her time, Mae West was making about $400K ($7 million today) a year during the early to mid-1930s. West starred in the films She Done Him Wrong, Belle of the Nineties, and Every Day’s a Holiday. She also owned many real estate properties, such as a ranch in the San Fernando Valley, a beach house in Santa Monica, and a Hollywood apartment. During the '50s and '60s, she produced musclemen shows in Las Vegas. West also wrote six books and was ranked the 15th greatest female star of all time.

Mary Pickford, Died at 87 - $40 million

Gladys Louise Smith, better known as Mary Pickford, was the highest paid actress during the silent film era. Even though she was Canadian, she was considered America’s Sweetheart during her life. She was one of the biggest actresses of the 1910s and 1920s, which earned her the nickname "Queen of the Movies". Pickford won an Honorary Academy Award in 1976 and Academy Award for Best Actress in 1980. George Randolph Scott, Died at 89 - $100 million

Randolph Scott’s career spanned from 1928 to 1962. Although he appeared in a variety of genres, including comedies, social dramas, musicals, and fantasy movies, Scott was mostly recognized for his Westerns. Some of the movies he starred in are Broken Dreams, The Thundering Herd, and The Bounty Hunter. After retiring at the age of 64, he managed to accumulate $100 million thanks to his shrewd investments, with oil wells, holdings in real estate, and securities being his major sources of income after he left the limelight.

As one of the most popular Hollywood stars, Heston appeared in 100 films throughout his career. He received the title role in Ben-Hur, winning the Academy Award for Best Actor. James Stewart, also recognized as Jimmy Stewart, is among the most popular and honored stars in film history. He was nominated for five Academy Awards and also won in the competition for The Philadelphia Story. Stewart was also named the “third-greatest male screen legend” of the Hollywood’s Golden Age. He appeared in over 90 films including It’s a Wonderful Life, Vertigo, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Edward Montgomery Clift is best remembered for his roles in The Heiress, Red River, The Young Lions, and A Place in the Sun. During his career, he received three Academy Award nominations for Best Actor and one for Best Supporting Actor. Clift was attracted to both men and women, although his friend Elizabeth Taylor later confirmed his relationships with men. In 1966, he was involved in a severe car accident. He suffered a broken nose and jaw, and other facial lacerations that required plastic surgery. At the age of 45, he passed away due to occlusive coronary artery disease.

Paul Newman, Died at 83 - $80 million

An American actor, producer, film director, and voice actor, Paul Leonard Newman is also an entrepreneur, IndyCar owner, race car driver, activist, and humanitarian. He won an Academy Awards for his outstanding performance in the movie The Color of Money. Newman also starred in The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, Harper, and The Verdict. On June 2008, he was diagnosed with lung cancer and died on the morning of September 26. The estimated value of the actor’s estate was over $80 million.

Ava Gardner, Died at 67 - Unknown (Speculated $5 million)

An American actress and singer, Ava Gardner appeared in many small roles until she was recognized for her performance in the 1946 film The Killers. She received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress, BAFTA Award, as well as Golden Globe Award. Gardner appeared in high-profile movies from the 1940s to 1970s, including Pandora and the Flying Dutchman, The Hucksters, The Barefoot Contessa, and 55 Days at Peking. Taylor starred in Cleopatra and tied the knot with her co-star Richard Burton. She also participated in AIDS/HIV activism. Having struggled with numerous health problems since she was young, she died at the age of 79 due to congestive heart failure.

Vivien Leigh, Died at 53 - $10 million

Also recognized as Lady Olivier, Vivien Leigh won two Academy Awards for Best Actress for her remarkable performances in Gone with the Wind and Blanche DuBois. She starred in comedies by Noel Coward and George Bernard, as well as in classic works by Shakespeare such as Cleopatra, Juliet, Lady Macbeth, and Ophelia. Leigh married director, actor, and producer Laurence Olivier, and they often starred together on stage. The American Film Institute ranked her as the 16th greatest female movie star of all time. Betty Joan Perske, professionally known as Lauren Bacall, was known for her sultry looks and distinctive voice. The American Film Institute listed her as the 20th greatest female star of classic Hollywood cinema. In 2009, she received an Academy Honorary Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Bacall appeared in many hit movies throughout the late 1940s and 1950s, including Young Man with a Horn, Dark Passage, and How to Marry a Millionaire. Bacall passed away on August 12, 2014, five weeks before her 90th birthday. She had an estimated $40 million estate, and in her will, she left $10K to Sam Robards, her youngest son so that he could take care of her dog. We don't know why Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain decided to take his own life when he was just 27 years old because his career was just skyrocketing into even greater success. He shot himself in 1994 and they found drugs in his system at the time of his death. He was only worth around $50 million when he died but a decade later, his worth shot up to $450 million.

An American model, artist, and actress, Farrah Fawcett was a six-time Golden Globe Award nominee and four-time Emmy Award nominee. She gained her international popularity after posing for her iconic red swimsuit poster. She played the role of Jill Munroe in the first season of Charlie’s Angels. She also appeared in a number of television series, including The Six Million Dollar Man, Harry O, Spin City, and The Guardian. In 1948, he was declared the “most admired man alive” by American polls, ahead of Pope Pius XII and Jackie Robinson. His performance as Father Chuck O’Malley in Going My Way allowed him to win an Academy Award for Best Actor. With a net worth of $50 million, Crosby died from a massive heart attack at the age of 77. He was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in California.

Tony Curtis, Died at 85 - $60 million

Bernard Schwartz, known as Tony Curtis, acted in more than 100 films. He was most popular in the 1950s and 1960s, but his career spanned six decades. His acting had progressed immensely after he starred in Houdini with his wife, Janet Leigh. After receiving a lot of fan mail, Universal decided to give him the main role in The Prince Who Was A Thief. His other successful films include Flesh and Fury, No Room for the Groom, and Son of Ali Baba. The legendary actor died of cardiac arrest, leaving behind five children and seven grandchildren. William Holden, Died at 63 - $20 million

One of the biggest draws of the 1950s and 1960s, William Holden won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his excellent performance in Stalag 17. He also received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor. Holden starred in a number of Hollywood’s most famous movies, including The Wild Bunch, Sabrina, Sunset Boulevard, and Network. He was included in the list of Top 10 Stars of the Year six times and ranked 25th on the list of 25 greatest male stars of Classic Hollywood Cinema. With a career that lasted almost eight decades, Leslie Townes “Bob” Hope appeared in over 70 films, and 54 of those with Hope as the star. He was best known for comedies like My Favorite Brunette and Road. In addition to his television roles and stage productions, he also wrote 14 books in his spare time. Hope also participated in the sports of boxing and golf, and owned a small stake in Cleveland Indians baseball team. In 1997, he was declared an honorary veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. Hope died of pneumonia aged 100 at a hospital in California after his elder care physicians could not save his life.

Danny Kaye, Died at 76 - $10 million

Danny Kaye’s performances featured rapid-fire novelty songs, idiosyncratic pantomimes, and physical comedy. He starred in 17 films, including The Kid from Brooklyn, Wonder Man, Hans Christian Andersen, The Inspector General, and White Christmas. He received two Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his outstanding performance in On the Riviera and Me and the Colonel. In 1954, Kaye was the first ambassador-at-large of UNICEF. He also received the French Legion of Honour for his years of service to the organization. On March 3, 1987, Kaye died of heart failure, aged 76. Sources say he had a net worth of $10 million at the time of his passing.

Gene Kelly, Died at 83 - $10 million

Best known for his performances in films such as Anchors Aweigh and An American in Paris, Gene Kelly also directed, starred in, and choreographed many of the most highly regarded musicals of the 1940s to 1950s. His film Hello, Dolly! was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. In 1952, Kelly received an Academy Honorary Award and won six Academy Awards. He was ranked 15th in the list of the Greatest Male Stars of Classic Hollywood. In the late 1980s, his health started to decline. He died on February 2, 1996, and his body was cremated without memorial services or funeral.

Jack Lemmon, Died at 76 - $25 million

An American musician and actor, Lemmon won two Academy Awards and nominated eight times. He starred in more than 60 movies, such as Mister Roberts, The Apartment, and Some Like It Hot. His singing voice was first heard on two movie soundtracks My Sister Eileen and Three for the Show. His first solo album was released in 1958, and his second album featured his piano and singing solos. Lemmon was also nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his excellent performance in the 1982 Missing. He had a net worth of $25 million when he died on June 27, 2001, of metastatic cancer of the bladder.

Fred MacMurray, Died at 83 - $2 million

Frederic Martin MacMurray’s career spanned nearly 50 years. Best known for his role in Double Indemnity, he appeared in over 100 films, such as The Shaggy Dog and The Absent-Minded Professor. In the 1930s, he worked with film directors Preston Sturges and Billy Wilder, along with actors Marlene Dietrich, Humphrey Bogart, and Barbara Stanwyck.  MacMurray was also the first actor honored as a Disney Legend. He became one of the richest actors, mainly from his wise real estate investments. A heavy smoker, MacMurray struggled with throat cancer in 1970s, which returned in 1987. He also suffered from stroke and leukemia. At the age of 83, the famous actor died of leukemia, which not even the best cancer doctor could prevent.

Robert Mitchum, Died at 79 - $10 million

Robert Mitchum rose to fame for his starring roles in Out of the Past, Cape Fear and The Night of the Hunter. He was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Story of G.I. Joe. Mitchum is also ranked 23rd on the list of the Greatest Male Stars of Classic American Cinema. His last movie appearance was in the television biopic James Dean: Race with Destiny. With a net worth of $10 million, he died on July 1, 1997, due to complications of emphysema and lung cancer.

Marlene Dietrich, Died at 90 - $30 million

A German singer and actress who held both American and German citizenship, Marlene Dietrich maintained her fame by persistently reinventing herself. Her performance in the 1930 film The Blue Angel brought her to stardom and earned her a contract with Paramount Pictures. The film also featured her "trademark" song Falling in Love Again. She starred in a number of iconic Hollywood films, including Desire, Shanghai Express, Dishonored and Morocco. Dietrich died of renal failure on May 6, 1992. A significant portion of her estate was sold to the Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek. The American Film Institute named her the 9th greatest female star of Classic Hollywood cinema in 1999.

Joan Fontaine, Died at 96 - $40 million

Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland, best known as Joan Fontaine, had roles in more than 40 films in her illustrious career that spanned an incredible 50 years. She received her breakthrough role in the 1937 film The Man Who Found Himself. Her role in Rebecca saw her nominated for the first time (out of three) for the Academy Award for Best Actress. She also won an Academy Award for her performance in Suspicion. For most of her life, she was working in television, radio, and several stage productions, including The Lion in Winter, Cactus Flower, and Private Lives. She died of old age on December 15, 2013, enjoying a long and comfortable life, perhaps speaking volumes to the quality of elder care available when one has a net worth of $40 million...

Peter O’Toole, Died at 81 - $50 million

Peter O’Toole was one of Hollywood’s most highly respected actors. He first achieved worldwide recognition after playing T.E. Lawrence in the 1962 iconic film Lawrence of Arabia. O'Toole also received eight nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actor, and he holds the record for the most number of nominations for acting without a win. One of the most famous actors from the 1940s to 1960s, Gregory Peck’s performance in To Kill a Mockingbird earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor. He also received nominations for his roles in Twelve O’Clock High, The Keys of the Kingdom, Gentleman’s Agreement, and The Yearling. In the ‘70s, Robert Conrad was able to become famous throughout the nation by playing in series like Black Sheep Squadron and Centennial. At the time of his death, Robert was worth approximately $2 million. He passed away from heart failure at his house in Beverly Hills in February 2020. Robert had long-since retired from acting, with the last film he acted in being Dead Above Ground back in 2002. In January 2020, the entire world was shocked to hear about the untimely passing of Kobe Bryant. His incredible talent as a basketball player was showcased throughout his career with the Los Angeles Lakers. With that, he was able to amass a gigantic $600-million fortune for himself and his family to get by. Kobe passed away in a helicopter accident in January 2020.
